Analysis of student-practitioner medical referral data
Deputy Head of Clinical year Michelle Venter published a fascinating article in the Spring 2025 edition of the British Acupuncture Council professional magazine, Acu. Michelle analysed all the referral data gathered from our clinical year students to date, to evaluate what proportion of cases involved a referral to a health professional, and why referrals were being made. For example, referrals involve students picking up signs and symptoms that suggest a GP investigation is needed, as patients may need additional conventional care; or students have picked up red flag side effects or interactions between medicines that require a formal medicines review.
At TAA, we are proud to showcase the professionalism of our student practitioners, and also reflect the skills of our BAcC acupuncture colleagues in general. More and more, it falls to us to help fill the gaps in the NHS and pick up concerns that may otherwise be missed. This is another way in which our role in the wider healthcare provision of the UK is such a vital one.
